Fire crews were searching through the rubble of a building collapse on Druid Hill Avenue, but after more than an hour of searching officials said it did not appear anyone was hurt.
The collapse was reported about 3:20 p.m. at a vacant two-story building in the 1800 block of Druid Hill Ave., said Chief Kevin Cartwright, a fire department spokesman. The caller said a woman had been walking by and was possibly trapped under the debris.
"There's no evidence whatsoever [of a trapped person] after an hour here, but firefighters are combing through the brick and lumber to make sure until we confirm 100 percent that no one's there," Cartwright said.
He said a thermal imaging camera was used to help detect whether someone was under the rubble.
Property records show the building was sold in July for $13,000 to Dow Properties, Inc. The records show the building was built in 1920 and has been listed as vacant.
A real estate listing for the building indicated that it was a "former church and had five store fronts" and that "due to the amount of time the building was vacant, the zoning was changed from commercial to residential."
