Police have made an arrest in an Upper Fells Point robbery and are investigating whether the 21-year-old suspect is connected to any other incidents that occurred in the area last week.

Leonard Copeland was charged with one count of first-degree robbery in an Aug. 2 incident in the 1600 block of east Lombard Street. Copeland, of the 200 block of South Herring Court, in the Perkins Homes housing project, lives just a few blocks from the attack. According to electronic court records, he has no previous criminal history.

At least four other violent robberies occurred last week in residential blocks north of Fells Point -- near Butchers Hill and west of Patterson Park neighborhoods -- prompting police to assign a special "flex" unit of officers to the area.

In one attack, a man was jumped by a group of teenagers who chased him, threw him to the ground, punched and kicked him and robbed him of his iPhone, $25 in cash and a black leather wallet.

A handgun was used in one robbery, and at least two others involved up to 10 teens or young men. In one attack August 3 on South Ann Street, police said one of the attackers repeatedly shouted to the victim, "[Expletive] you white boy," as he and several other black youths beat him and stole his cell phone and $100.

Baltimore police said they are investigating that attack as a hate crime.

At least one of the robberies, an attack with a gun on South Chester Street the same week, appears to be unrelated to the others. The attackers in that incident were described as white.
