Two homeless people taken to hospital after fire in city

Two homeless people were taken to the hospital after a vacant building downtown caught fire Tuesday night, officials said.

The two adults suffered from smoke inhalation but had left the brick row home in the 300 block of St. Paul Place before fire crews arrived at the scene, said Captain Roman Clark, a fire department spokesman.

He said the victims were believed to be squatters.

The fire was contained to two vacant brick buildings across from Mercy Medical Center, said Chief Charles Browning, the fire official on the scene.

It took about half hour to get the fire under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
