On one of Baltimore's most violent weekends so far this year, 10 people were shot in incidents across the city, with two confirmed dead.
The police have no suspects in any of the shootings, which spanned early Saturday through Sunday morning, and can't say whether any are connected. But spokesman Detective Jeremy Silbert said the department is following leads and speaking to witnesses.
"In these areas where the shootings occurred, we'll be increasing patrols," Silbert said.
The unusually high number of incidents in a 24-hour period began about 1 a.m. Saturday, when a man suffered a nonfatal gunshot wound to the back.
Later that day, about 5 p.m., police responded to a shooting in the 400 block of N. Luzerne Ave. in East Baltimore, Silbert said. The victim was shot once in the stomach and twice in the arm.
The victim told police that he was riding his bicycle when two men he didn't know came from the alley and began shooting. The victim was taken to a local hospital, and his condition was unknown.
Several hours later, about 9:30 p.m., and less than three miles away, another man was shot in the chest and killed in the 1900 block of Washington St., Silbert said. Police found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he died just before 10 p.m. The victim was identified as Marquell Turner, 19, of the 800 block of Bonaparte St.
About the same time, another man was shot in the Northwest area of the city at Park Heights and Woodland avenues, several blocks south of Pimlico Race Course. The 29-year-old victim was shot in the head, torso and leg. He died from his injuries, Silbert said.
A half-hour later, about 10 p.m., police were called to 1300 N. Montford Ave. in East Baltimore, where Silbert said at least three people were shot. One male victim was shot in the ankle, a second was shot in the ankle, foot and arm, and a third victim was shot in the shoulder. Two were 17-year-olds and the third was 53. A short time later, a 21-year-old man walked into a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the ankle and said he had also been shot on Montford Avenue.
Early Sunday, the shooting continued. About 1:15 a.m., Western District officers found a 24-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the 2400 block of Stoddard St., Silbert said. He was taken to a local hospital. His condition was unknown.
Just before 9 a.m., police found a man in the 2500 block of Winchester St. suffering from a gunshot wound, Silbert said. He was taken to a local hospital. No other information was available.
Police Department statistics released earlier this month show that nonfatal shootings are thus far up slightly over 2009. That year, however, they had fallen by 135 from the year before.
The city's deadliest weekend so far this year was the three-day Memorial Day weekend, when 10 people were fatally shot.
