3-alarm fire tears through E. Baltimore church, causes rear to collapse

A three-alarm fire at an East Baltimore church tore through its roof and destroyed the rear of the building Thursday morning, according to Fire Department officials.

The blaze at Mount Calvary Star Baptist Church started at about 9:30 a.m. in the 1700 block of N. Milton Ave., officials say. More than 35 emergency vehicles responded to the scene, and as of 11 a.m., the fire was not yet under control.

The Rev. Alex Young, pastor of the church for 33 years, called the loss "devastating" to his 300-member congregation. Young said he is unsure where he will hold his Sunday service.

No one was injured in the blaze; it was unclear if anyone was at the church at the time of the fire.

Investigators have not yet determined a cause.
