Three suspects in killing of Marine held without bail

Three Baltimore men were ordered held without bail Monday morning after being arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the Saturday morning stabbing death of a Marine at a house party in Northeast Baltimore, according to police and court records.

The three men arrested and charged with the murder of Pfc. Darius Ray were Michael Wiggins, 26; Vernon Hadley, 22; and Nicholas Woodard, 27, according to Baltimore police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. Four homicide detectives interviewed more than 30 witnesses to the stabbing, Guglielmi said.

"The murder of a service member hits very hard," Guglielmi said. "And we marshaled all of our resources to put this case down very quickly."

Ray, 20, was from Potomac and stationed in Washington. He was a three-sport athlete at Magruder High in Montgomery County and set a school record with a long jump of more than 22 feet.

He enlisted in the Marines in June and was training in ceremonial drills to become a member of the color guard.

"This loss is definitely being felt throughout the command," said Capt. Lisa Lawrence, public affairs officer for the Washington barracks.

Ray was stabbed in the upper torso and pronounced dead at 4:58 a.m. Saturday at Sinai Hospital. Charging documents indicate that the altercation took place in a dwelling and the parking lot of an apartment complex.

Guglielmi said Monday that the first patrol officer on the scene secured the residence where the party was being held, then followed a blood trail to a nearby home, where additional witnesses were located.

Another man stabbed at the party remained at Good Samaritan Hospital on Sunday with injuries that were not life-threatening, Guglielmi said.

A group of neighborhood men showed up at the party in the 6900 block of McClean Blvd. and were asked to leave, according to Guglielmi. An altercation ensued, and one of the suspects left the party, only to return with a knife, he said.
