Police seize heroin, more than $15,000 in counterfeit money in bust

Police seized more than $15,000 in counterfeit money after chasing suspected drug dealers to a home in West Baltimore Thursday morning.

Ten people were arrested and raw heroin was also seized in a bust that netted more than $22,000, including the counterfeit funds, said police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. He declined to release the names of the suspects, saying that the U.S. Secret Service was involved and the investigation is continuing.

At about 6:45 a.m., the Central District operations squad observed a gold Pontiac Grand Prix, which they believed to be involved in drug activity, in the 600 block of McCulloh St. and conducted brief surveillance.

When men and women were observed engaging in a suspected drug activity, the officers attempted a traffic stop and the vehicle sped off. Officers followed it into the Western District, and the vehicle's occupants ran into a home in the 2300 block of Avalon Ave., in the Parkview/Woodbrook neighborhood.

Guglielmi said the officers "observed drugs in plain view" and obtained a search and seizure warrant for the home. Inside, they found $22,245 in cash, $15,580 of which was counterfeit, he said. They also seized seven resealable bags of heroin and a half-ounce of raw heroin.

Of the 10 people who were taken into custody, Guglielmi said three were on probation.

A representative of the Secret Service said an agent had been assigned to work on the case along with city detectives, but said he could not provide additional information.
