A 9-year-old boy was shot in the left hand Tuesday night in West Baltimore when three men kicked in the front door of his house, shot the family dog and wounded the child, according to city police.

The boy was taken to an area hospital and was expected to make a full recovery, police said.

About 11 p.m., a man knocked on the door of a house in the 1600 block of N. Ellamont St., according to police. The man asked to speak to someone he believed stayed in the home, but a resident of the house said no one by that name lived there, police said. As the resident closed the door, the man pulled out a gun and fired a shot at the handle, according to police.

The resident ran out of the house through a back door, leaving a 50-year-old woman and the boy, who is her grandson, inside, police said. The gunman entered the house with two others and ordered the woman and her grandson to sit on a couch, then shot the dog. Police said the dog escaped out the back door, and its condition was unknown.

As the intruder questioned the woman, police said, one of them pulled out a gun. The boy put his hand up to protect his grandmother and the gun discharged, striking the boy, according to police. The men then left the house.

Police have identified no suspects and had not determined a motive.

Wednesday afternoon, yellow police tape blocked off the home's front yard from the sidewalk, and marked police vehicles with uniformed officers were stationed in the front and back of the house.

Broken glass from a door rested on the porch.

Several neighbors interviewed said they did not hear anything Tuesday night.
