Suspect arrested in Roland Park shooting of Zeb Drinkwater

Baltimore police found another suspect they say is linked to several street robberies of joggers and pedestrians across the city this month, this time arresting a man allegedly involved in the shooting of a man in Roland Park last week.

Yahsim Vaughn, 23, was identified as one of two men responsible for wounding 36-year-old Zeb Drinkwater in the 4100 block of Roland Avenue just before 2 a.m. on Aug. 14. Police say Drinkwater was walking a friend to her car when they were approached by two suspects, who shot him.

Police have said the shooting was an attempted robbery, and it came amid a string of street robberies that were particularly prevalent in the North Baltimore neighborhoods of Hampden, Roland Park and Remington.

The robberies, which primarily targeted smart phones, prompted police to increase patrols in neighborhoods that had experienced the crimes while Johns Hopkins University security officials urged staff and faculty to try and stay off cell phones in public and not use headphones while walking or jogging.

On Friday, Baltimore police announced that they had arrested three juveniles who they say are linked to more than 20 recent cellphone robberies and two carjackings, mostly in North Baltimore. The suspects were ages 15, 16 and 17, and police said they primarily drove around in stolen vehicles looking for victims with cellphones out. Police said the suspects were behind 12 crimes in the Northern District, six in the Northeastern and several in Southeast Baltimore.

Police said they continue to search for a second suspect in the shooting of Drinkwater. Vaughn, they said, was arrested on an unrelated charge on Tuesday but was charged with the shooting on Wednesday.

"This shooting came in the midst of a series of cell phone robberies in the area, those suspects were arrested late last week, bringing even greater attention to a crime in a neighborhood that doesn't typically see this type of violence," police said in a statement.

A web page, "Help Zeb with bills and stuff," set up by Drinkwater's friends through has raised $16,036 from 354 people in six days. In an update posted on Tuesday, the website reported that "Zeb is out of surgery, had the tubes removed from his throat, and is recovering slowly."

Police said Vaughn is being charged with at least an assault charge. A charging document was not available and his exact charges or a lawyer's name were not listed online in court records. Court records show Vaughn was convicted of second-degree assault in 2011. His attorney in that case could not be reached and initial attempts to reach a relative were not successful.

Police have asked anyone who may have any information on the second suspect to call the Northen District Detective Unit at (410) 396-2455.
