Pride of Baltimore II leaves American waters en route to Toronto amid four-month journey

The Pride of Baltimore II leaves the Inner Harbor for a four-month, 8,000-mile journey that will take it along the East Coast to the Great Lakes, with the goal of drawing attention — and, organizers hope, visitors — to the city and state. (Caitlin Faw, Baltimore Sun video)

After leaving the Inner Harbor two weeks ago, the historic Pride of Baltimore II began making its way around Nova Scotia on Monday on pace to reach Toronto at the end of the month.

The vessel's four-month, 8,000-mile voyage is its first long-term expedition in about three years. The ship stopped in Norfolk, Virginia last week for the city's annual HarborFest before continuing to Lunenberg, Nova Scotia for a short-term stop.

"The sea is relatively smooth, so the ship is holding very steady on account of the pressure of the wind on the sails," wrote Jan Miles, the ship's captain, on his blog.

Miles described the Canadian customs clearance process as "prompt," as the ship now will travel in Canadian waters until July 7, when the ship will dock in Fairport Harbor, Ohio along Lake Erie.

Toronto is the next scheduled stop for the Pride II, with an expected arrival date of June 30. In Toronto, the vessel will participate in the Redpath Waterfront Festival and the first of five races in the 2016 Tall Ships Challenge Great Lakes.

The ship, known as America's Star-Spangled Ambassador, will make its way to various stops before returning to Baltimore in October.
