Baltimore firefighters responding to an overnight rowhouse blaze in Southeast Baltimore found an occupant dead on the second floor, the department said.

The department said it was too soon to identify the victim by name or provide a gender or age. A release referred to the victim as an “adult occupant."

“The person was lying on the second floor in the hallway,” department spokeswoman Blair Adams said. “I don’t think they were able to identify if it was a man or a woman."

The fire was spotted on the second floor of the rowhouse on the 3500 block of E. Fairmount Avenue in the Baltimore Highlands neighborhood shortly after 1:30 a.m.

Photos posted on the department’s Facebook page showed the home with damaged windows and a pile of rubble on the sidewalk in front. The adjoining rowhouses were intact.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner’s office.
