The original, 200-year-old cornerstone of Baltimore's Washington Monument was discovered Monday, according to the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy.
A time capsule, located in what the Conservancy believes is a hollowed-out well in the base of the stone, will be opened Wednesday morning, with an unveiling of the items originally placed during a ceremony on July 4, 1815.
According to the Conservancy, the laying of the cornerstone marked the first American monument dedicated to George Washington.
The cubic stone, measuring 24 inches on each side, was discovered as contractors were digging a pit for a sewage tank near the northeast corner of the monument.
