Person discovered dead following vacant rowhouse fire in Baltimore, fire officials say

Firefighters discovered a dead person Friday night after suppressing a substantial fire at a Baltimore rowhouse, officials said.

Assistant Fire Chief Roman Clark said officials have yet to identify the gender of the person, nor could they say whether the person was dead before the fire or died as a result of the blaze.

That’s up to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine, Clark said. The person’s body was taken to the office for an autopsy to establish the cause and manner of their death.

Firefighters responded shortly after 8:30 p.m. Friday to the 1600 block of West North Avenue, the department said in a Facebook post.

They found a vacant, three-story rowhouse with flames visible on multiple floors, the department said.

Clark estimated 30-plus firefighters descended upon the city’s Penn North neighborhood to quell the blaze.

After extinguishing the fire, they found a dead person on the third floor, the department said.
