Baltimore police report 5 shootings Friday

Five people were shot in Baltimore on Friday, one fatally, pushing the total number of shootings this month to 99 and the number of homicides to 39.

The man who was killed was 19 years old, police said. He was not identified.

Also Friday, members of the Baltimore Police marine unit discovered the body of a female in water under the Interstate 395 overpass into the city after being called there about 5:15 p.m. The manner of death was not yet determined Friday evening, but homicide detectives were called to the scene. Two of the shootings were reported overnight, and three later on Friday.

A man was reported to be shot in the shoulder in the 800 block of Gretna Court, in the Brooklyn neighborhood. Detectives determined the shooting location after being called to an area hospital about 3:08 p.m. for a report of a victim with a gunshot wound, police said. A man was reported fatally shot in the chest about 4:28 p.m. in the 4000 block of West Belvedere Ave., in the southeast end of the Woodmere neighborhood. Officers on routine patrol in the area observed the 19-year-old man on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest, and called for medics, police said. The man was pronounced dead at an area hospital. Anyone with information is asked to call 410-396-2466.

About 8:43 p.m., police responded to the 1100 block of Ward Street, in the Washington Village/Pigtown neighborhood, for multiple reports of gunfire and a possible shooting. A man in medical distress was located and transferred to an area hospital, where it was determined he had been shot in the underarm, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call Southern District detectives at 410-396-2499.

Earlier on Friday, police said a man was shot in the leg in the 3200 block of McElderry St. in east Baltimore shortly before 12:30 a.m. The victim told police he was shot in the 3200 block of E Monument St. He was taken to an area hospital.

Then, at 12:48 a.m., officers were called to the 5200 block of Park Heights Ave. in the Arlington neighborhood where they found a man who had been shot in the chest. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Northwest District detectives are investigating and anyone with information is asked to call them at 410-396-2466.

Police have reported 39 homicides this month, making it the city's deadliest month since 1996. Among the victims are a mother and her 7-year-old son who were found shot to death Thursday in their Southwest Baltimore home.
