Rawlings-Blake names interim Baltimore Rec and Parks chief

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake tapped a deputy director to run the Department of Recreation and Parks, the city announced Wednesday.

William Vondrasek will take over for the agency's former director, Ernest Burkeen Jr., who left the agency this month. Burkeen, who was paid about $142,000, oversaw since 2012 the city's 262 parks, 120 playgrounds, 170 athletic fields and 110 tennis courts. The agency also maintains 101 basketball courts, 25 miles of biking and hiking trails, and various dog parks, pavilions and historic structures

Vondrasek has worked for the city since 2004. He earned $119,000 last year.

Burkeen's departure is among a handful of high-profile officials who have left the Rawlings-Blake administration in recent weeks. The mayor, who did not seek re-election, leaves office in December.
