The melted remnants of a plastic red slide hung limp over a swath of charred ground in South Baltimore, where a school playground caught fire Wednesday, fire officials said.
Firefighters were called at 1:52 p.m. to the playground behind Steuart Hill Academic Academy at S. Gilmor and W. Lexington streets in Union Square, said Samuel Johnson, a Baltimore Fire Department spokesman.
The playground, which was engulfed in flames, was unoccupied when firefighters arrived, he said. They brought the fire under control, and no injuries were reported.
Fire officials are investigating how the fire started, including whether it was set intentionally.
Baltimore City schools are closed for the summer; students' last day was June 15. The playgrounds are open to the public during the summer.
