Maryland inmate found dead in prison cell in Cumberland, department says

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is investigating the death of an inmate in his 20s who was being housed at the Western Correctional Institution, the department said Tuesday afternoon.

The officers found the inmate unresponsive in his cell Monday night and officers “immediately” began performing CPR and calling for medical assistance, the department said, adding medical staff on site continued CPR.

A local ambulance service arrived and took over life-saving measures but the inmate died. The Maryland State Police is conducting an investigation and working with the department pending the review of the medical examiner’s cause of death, the department said.
