Five-vehicle crash in Baltimore jams Interstate 83 in both directions for an hour

Interstate 83 was closed in both directions in Baltimore for about an hour Monday evening after a crash involving five vehicles near Northern Parkway, Baltimore Police said.

The accident was reported about 8:10 p.m. At least one person was injured, said Detective Chakia Fennoy, a police spokeswoman.

The rate of crashes on the Jones Falls Expressway/Interstate 83 in Baltimore is more than twice as high as other comparable Maryland highways, according to a new study.

At least two vehicles needed to be towed, she said.

Lanes began opening about 9 p.m., and all were open as of about 9:30 p.m., Fennoy said.
