Homes in northeast Baltimore were evacuated Tuesday afternoon because of an underground gas leak, city fire officials said.
Residences on the 3700 block of E. Northern Parkway and the 3700 block of Overlea Avenue were evacuated at about 10:30 a.m. as Baltimore Gas and Electric crews were working to fix the leak, said city fire spokesman Capt. Roman Clark.
He said the evacuations were a precaution, but many people were not home.
Crews remained on the scene throughout the day, but had not discovered the source of the leak as of 5 p.m., BGE spokeswoman Rachael Lighty said. Streets closed earlier in the day were reopened in time for the Tuesday evening rush, she said.
