Demonstrations began over the weekend outside the police department's Western District, where Gray was taken in the transport van on April 12.

Police on Monday said the department will continue to investigate what happened to Gray during the 30-minute ride in the police van as the likely explanation for his injuries, which include damage to his spinal chord and a crushed voice box.

The department also said Monday that Gray repeatedly asked for medical attention while inside the back of a prisoner transport van, but paramedics weren't called until later, when he was critically injured and unresponsive.

According to court documents, Gray was arrested "without force or incident" Gilmor Homes complex in West Baltimore, after officer found a "switchblade knife" clipped to the inside of his front pants pocket.

Police said cellphone and city surveillance videos, and an autopsy, shows no indication that force was used during the arrest. But some residents said they heard his screams and reported seeing officers beat him.

On Saturday and Sunday, hundreds stood outside the Department's Western District station, demanding information into Gray's death. Protests continued on Monday, outside the station and some demonstrators stood outside of police headquarters downtown, demanding the police commissioner to address them.
