Baltimore man drowns in Gulf of Mexico

A Baltimore man visiting Florida drowned Saturday afternoon in the Gulf of Mexico, authorities said.

William Thomas Batten Jr., 55, was unconscious when another beachgoer pulled him from the water off the Florida Panhandle, according to the Walton County Sheriff's Office.

At the time, yellow flags indicated a "medium hazard" along Miramar Beach.

The rescuer, deputies and paramedics were not able to revive Batten on the beach, police said. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
