Elderly man dies in early morning fire in Northeast Baltimore

An elderly man died in a house fire in Northeast Baltimore Saturday morning, a city fire department spokesman said.

Firefighters were called at 5:49 a.m. to the 1900 block Hillenwood Road in the Perring Loch neighborhood, where they found moke was pouring from the first floor, said fire department spokesman Samuel Johnson.

Units were able to make entry into the house and extinguish the blaze "within minutes," he said. One elderly man died, but Johnson did not have information on the victim's name or age.

Although nearly a foot of snow had accumulated in the city overnight, Johnson said the snow did not inhibit the department's response to the home.

"The streets on that road had already been plowed so it didn't affect response," Johnson said.

The victim was the only person inside the home. No firefighters were injured, he said. The death is the second fire fatality in Baltimore this year, Johnson said.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
