Candles started the house fire last week in East Baltimore that left an infant girl in critical condition, firefighters said Monday.

Thunderstorms knocked out power on Gough Street in the Eastwood neighborhood Aug. 14. Candles used during the outage set the house on fire on the 6800 block, firefighters said.

The 8-month-old girl was trapped upstairs in the home and carried out by firefighters. She was found beside the family dog, which had died.

The dog, Polo, had covered the child with its body, protecting the girl, according to a Go Fund Me page for the family. That page said the girl was burned on 19 percent of her body.

Now a week after the fire, she remains in critical condition, firefighters said.

Officials urged families never to leave candles unattended and to plan for outages with flashlights and a radio.

Also Monday, firefighters announced two recent fires were found to be arsons.

A two-story row house in Locust Point was set on fire on the morning of Aug. 13, firefighters said. Crews arrived about 9:30 a.m. to the fire on the 1300 block of Cooksie St. Firefighters provided no other details, but said police were investigating.
