Liquor board revokes license of popular Loyola University bar

Baltimore's liquor board voted unanimously Thursday to revoke the license of a North Baltimore bar popular among Loyola University Maryland students.

By a 3-0 vote, the board decided not to renew the license of Favorite's Pub — a regular venue for Loyola students known as "Craig's" — after Baltimore police accused the establishment of serving alcohol to more than 100 underage patrons.

The vote, which means the bar is no longer allowed to sell alcohol, came after the board members issued a 104-day suspension of the venue's license in January.

The community group York Road Partnership filed a protest against the bar's license. Attorney Becky Witt of the Community Law Center said "extremely inebriated students stumbling through the neighborhoods" negatively impacted residents there, especially in the Homeland neighborhood.

"It's a shame that we had to take such steps, but I was pleased to see the board's validation of the community's concerns," added City Councilman Bill Henry, who represents the area.

Attorney Melvin J. Kodenski, who represented Favorite's owner, Jeffrey Evans, said the board didn't give the establishment enough of a chance to improve. He argued the board was being unnecessarily harsh, and managers had plans to turn Favorite's into a more family-friendly restaurant.

"It's taking a business out of Baltimore," Kodenski said. "This was this man's livelihood."
