A woman died after she fell down a manhole early Sunday two blocks west of Lexington Market, firefighters said Monday.
She fell 10 feet down into the manhole at Pearl and West Lexington streets about 4:30 a.m. and had to be pulled out by firefighters, one of whom was injured during the rescue, department spokesman Samuel Johnson said.
The firefighter was treated for his injuries.
Firefighters have not identified the woman, and the circumstances of the incident remain unclear, such as whether the manhole cover was off, and what caused the woman to fall.
