Howard Street Tunnel reopens after train derailment

The Howard Street Tunnel reopened Thursday night, ending a three-day shut-down due to a train derailment Monday.

The tunnel reopened at around 8 p.m., shortly after CSX crews finished replacing train tracks damaged in the derailment, according to CSX spokesman Rob Doolittle.

Trains that normally travel through the tunnel were routed west to Cumberland this week after 13 of a train's 124 cars went off the rails at the Mount Royal Station at around 5:45 a.m. Monday, and slid to a stop in the Howard Street Tunnel. One of the 13 cars was carrying acetone, a flammable chemical, requiring workers to use extra caution in righting the derailed cars and replacing the damaged tracks.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation, Doolittle said.

"CSX appreciates the response and assistance from the Baltimore Fire and Police Departments throughout this incident," Dolittle said, "and we apologize for any inconvenience we might have caused to the residents of Mount Royal as we were working to restore service."
