An outdoor cafe would be allowed at an Inner Harbor park under legislation introduced Monday by City Councilman Eric Costello.
Costello said he submitted the measure to open a cafe Rash Field at the request of the nonprofit Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore, which oversees maintenance and improvements of the Inner Harbor.
Monday night, Costello said the legislation would allow for "light concessions," such as a hot dog stand. But Tuesday he said the bill would allow for a cafe.
According to information from the Waterfront Partnership, the legislation would allow a half acre of outdoor eateries south of the Baltimore Visitor Center, specifically one cafe in Rash Field and one in West Shore Park.
The partnership is planning a $5 million renovation of Rash Field, to begin in fall 2017, to encourage more use of the concrete-bound sand pit and field.
Costello said a previous administration entered into an agreement to prohibit vending in the Inner Harbor. If his bill passes the City Council and is signed by the mayor, it would be put to voters in November.
The legislation must pass by August to be put on the ballot.
