A 1-year-old boy in a stroller was killed when he was hit by a car Sunday night in Northeast Baltimore.
The child's mother was pushing him in a stroller on the sidewalk when a silver Mercedes-Benz hit a Volvo at Sinclair Lane and Moravia Road in Frankford, sending the Volvo up onto the sidewalk, where it struck the child, police said.
The man driving the Mercedes had been fleeing Baltimore County police after hitting a patrol car blocking off the scene of an earlier fatal crash in the 8200 block of Pulaski Highway in Rosedale, police said. County police chased him into the city, where he struck the Volvo just after 9 p.m., county police spokeswoman Officer Jen Peach said.
On Monday, Baltimore police identified the boy who died as 16-month-old Jerimiah Perry.
Police had not identified the driver or the person killed in the earlier collision as of late Sunday night.
"Right now, our thoughts and prayers are with the family of this 1-year-old baby boy that by all accounts was in a baby stroller with his mother at a bus stop when he was struck by this vehicle," city police spokesman Detective Jeremy Silbert said.
The driver of the Mercedes was arrested and taken to the hospital for his injuries. The child's mother and the driver of the Volvo were not injured, police said.
Baltimore County police do not have a policy that forbids chasing suspects in vehicles, Peach said.
"We have a complete matrix, and it's very detailed, as to when and when we cannot we can conduct a vehicle pursuit," she said. "At this time, all of that is still under investigation. We're going to look into whether or not all of the pursuit policy was followed."
The incident began around 6:40 p.m., when a man was struck as he attempted to cross Pulaski Highway near Kreuger Avenue, Baltimore County police said. The man was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he died, according to Baltimore County police.
Pulaski Highway was closed as Baltimore County crews investigated.
About 75 minutes later, a silver Mercedes-Benz struck a county police car involved in the road closure. The driver of the car drove away from the scene toward Baltimore City, leading a county officer in pursuit.
The pursuit ended in the 5300 block of Moravia Road, when the vehicle struck the Volvo, then a pole.
Baltimore City police are investigating the crash on Moravia Road, while county police investigate the initial fatal crash and the hit-and-run crash involving the department vehicle on Pulaski Highway.
