A five-year-old child was critically injured in an apartment fire in the Madison Park neighborhood of Baltimore Monday morning, fire department officials said.

He was not breathing when he was rescued from the home, but was resuscitated at the scene and was breathing with mechanical assistance at a hospital, Fire department spokesman Capt. Roman Clark said.

On Tuesday morning, the boy was still in critical condition, but was improving, Clark said.

Clark said the fire was reported around 8 a.m. in an apartment building at 1715 Madison Ave., and firefighters found heavy fire coming from a first-floor apartment when they arrived. The child was the only person taken to a hospital, he said.

Firefighters were still working to get the fire under control as of about 8:30 a.m., he said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
