Warrant issued for woman in death of newborn son

A warrant has been issued charging a West Baltimore woman with the death of her newborn son, who drowned in a toilet when she gave birth in March, police said.

The woman's name was withheld pending her arrest, said Officer Nicole Monroe, a police spokeswoman.

Monroe said a friend of the woman removed the newborn from a toilet inside a house in the 300 block of S. Monroe St. about 4 p.m. March 8 and wrapped him in a towel before calling 911. Medics pronounced the child, estimated to be 28 to 32 weeks' gestation, dead at the scene and notified police, Monroe said.

The woman was taken to Mercy Medical Center and was interviewed there by police.

Monroe said autopsy results released Monday revealed that the infant, who was 14 inches long and nearly 3 pounds, had air in his lungs, indicating that he had taken a breath. The autopsy determined that the death was caused by drowning and was ruled a homicide.

Monroe said the woman told police she did not know she was pregnant, although she had given birth 12 years ago.

An earlier version of this article misstated the date when the woman gave birth. The Sun regrets the error.
