Maryland state trooper hits, kills woman in accident

A Delaware woman died Friday night after being hit by a Maryland state trooper in Queen Anne's County, police said.

Iraina J. Curtis, 29, of Dover was struck by a patrol car on westbound Shopping Center Drive in Stevensville, Maryland State Police said in a statement Saturday. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

At about 9:00 p.m., six-year veteran of the force Trooper First Class Travis Nelson, 24, was headed to the location of a burglary call when he took the access ramp onto Shopping Center Drive from Route 50, police said.

Curtis was in the travel lane at the time she was struck, according to a preliminary investigation. The marked patrol vehicle did not have its emergency lights or siren activated at the time of the crash.

The speed of the patrol car is not know at this time, police said.

Jerome Wheeler, 20, was with the victim during the incident. He said he and Curtis were sitting on the wall along Shopping Center Drive waiting for a ride, according to the police statement. Curtis asked to use his cell phone and then stood up and moved off the wall, he told police.

The trooper had a 24-year-old ride-along passenger with him at the time of the accident who was slightly injured. Trooper Nelson also sustained minor injuries, police said.

State police are conducting an investigation. The completed investigation will be presented to the State's Attorney of Queen Anne's County.
