Maryland soldier killed in Iraq

A soldier from Waldorf has died in Iraq, the Pentagon announced today.

Army 1st Lt. Gwilym J. Newman, 24, died April 12 in Tarmiyah, Iraq, after being wounded by enemy small arms fire.

Newman was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Another Maryland soldier assigned to the cavalry was killed in Balad, Iraq, earlier this month. 1st Lt. Phillip Neel, 27, was killed when his unit encountered enemy forces using grenades.

Neel was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Meanwhile, the Department of Defense also announced today the death of a second Maryland soldier, this one killed in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Edelman L. Hernandez, 23, of Hyattsville, died April 11 in Korengal Valley while on combat patrol in an incident that is under investigation. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.
