3 homicides reported in city over weekend

Baltimore police are investigating three weekend homicides, including that of a woman shot in the head on a West Baltimore street after she told a friend not to give a cigarette to a man.

Shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday, Dawn Lynn Shipley, 29, of the 2600 block of Lehman Ave. was walking with a male friend in the 500 block of Brunswick St. when a man asked Shipley's companion for a cigarette, said Officer Nicole Monroe, a police spokeswoman. According to witness information, when Shipley told her friend not to give him one, the man pulled out a handgun and shot her. Her companion was not injured.

Two homicides were reported yesterday.

About 7 a.m., police responding to a shooting in the 2100 block of Orleans St. in the city's Middle East neighborhood found a gunshot victim in a backyard. The man was pronounced dead at the scene; his name was withheld pending notification of relatives. No arrest had been made, and police knew of no motive.

Shortly before 2 a.m., Sean W. Henderson, 35, whose address was not available, and another man were leaving a business in the 3200 block of Belair Road when they were shot by an unidentified man for no apparent reason. Police said Henderson and the other victim were taken to an area hospital, where Henderson died a short time later. The other man, also 35, was expected to survive.
