Alzheimer's Association

Volunteers are needed for office and clerical assistance, including data entry and mailings and a help line specialist. The organization also needs speakers, family support group facilitators and community outreach representatives, including those to attend health fairs. Social Services

Volunteers are needed October-December for the Department of Social Services' Holiday Sharing program which matches donors to seniors and/or families in need of Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance. Duties include answering and making phone calls and entering families' wish lists. Quiet Waters Park

Volunteers 15 and older are needed for a variety of tasks to support the operation of the park and events throughout the year. Information: friendsofquietwaterspark.org.

South River Federation

Volunteers are needed throughout the year for everything from oyster restoration projects to stream cleanups to event support. Interested individuals should contact Jennifer Carr at 410-224-3802 or email her at jennifer@southriverfederation.net.

Support groups

Volunteers 25 and older are needed to lead support groups for people with early stage Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Volunteers must be licensed nurses or social workers with knowledge of the progression of the disease and have strong communication and group-support management skills. Train guide dogs

Volunteers are needed to raise puppies to become guide dogs and prepare them for formal training. The volunteers, who can be as young as 13 with parental supervision, take the puppies into their homes for 14 to 18 months and teach them manners and social skills. In addition to working and playing daily with their dogs, the volunteers attend classes and puppy evaluations. Puppy classes are at 7 p.m. the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at St. Matthew's Church in Bowie.
