From ZOOMA to NASCAR, weekend events in region could affect Arundel traffic

Drivers could hit some congestion in Anne Arundel County this weekend due to multiple events planned for the greater Annapolis area.

The Maryland Transportation Authority is warning of heavy traffic at the Bay Bridge Friday through Sunday due to a NASCAR races at Dover International Speedway in Delaware. In the event of eastbound delays, officials will allow two-way traffic on the westbound span to alleviate delays, if weather permits.

Also Friday through Sunday, BGE plans to continue utility work in Crownsville including the use of helicopters to replace wires and utility poles. As part of that work, the exit ramp from southbound Interstate 97 onto Generals Highway and the ramp from Generals Highway onto northbound Interstate 97 will be closed Sunday morning from 7:30 until 8:30 a.m.

On Saturday, about 2,000 women will participate in the ZOOMA Annapolis half-marathon and 10K races beginning and ending at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Traffic delays are expected between 6:45 and 10:30 a.m. on Route 450 between Boulters Way and the Naval Academy Bridge, on Route 648 (Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard) between Route 450 and Greenbury Point Road and on Boulters Way between Route 450 and Winchester Road.

There also will be several street closures around the stadium and in downtown Annapolis to accommodate the race.
