Student finalists named
Three high school students have been named as finalists to become the next student member of the Anne Arundel County Board of Education.
They are Ayesha Chaudhry of South River High School in Edgewater, Camilla Shanley of North County High in Ferndale and Christopher Umanzor of Old Mill High in Millersville.
Anne Arundel is believed to have the only student board member in the nation with full voting rights. The student member serves a one-year term and earns a $6,000 college scholarship.
The finalists will participate in a candidates night at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at school system headquarters, 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis. The Chesapeake Regional Association of Student Councils will vote on the finalists during a meeting April 1. The winner's name will be forwarded to the governor, who makes the appointment.
The three finalists were selected from seven applicants who were interviewed by a panel that included the current student member, the CRASC president and a school system administrator.

Superintendent search narrows
Anne Arundel County school officials have whittled their list of superintendent candidates from more than 50 to seven.
Fifty-five people applied to replace Kevin Maxwell, who left Anne Arundel last year to take over the school system in Prince George's County. The list was narrowed to 12 and then to seven, who will be interviewed by members of the Board of Education.
After those interviews, board members will narrow the list further. Those candidates will meet with a 20-member community panel. The school system has not identified the candidates.
The Board of Education plans to appoint a superintendent April 23. Interim Superintendent Mamie Perkins has said she did not apply.

Rotary scholarships
The Rotary Club of Annapolis is accepting scholarship applications from graduating seniors attending Annapolis high schools, including home-schooled students. Up to four cash scholarship awards of $1,000 each are available to students who plan to attend an accredited college or university and have demonstrated a commitment to community services. Engineering scholarships
Anne Arundel Community College has been awarded a $598,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to help support its engineering scholars program. The grant will provide scholarships of up to $4,000 annually to financially needy, academically talented students to help them graduate from the school's engineering programs, transfer to a four-year institution and enter the workforce.
