Anne Arundel officer shoots at suspected car thief

An Anne Arundel County officer shot at a suspect after police encountered a car heist in progress in Hanover early Wednesday morning.

Police said officers went to Baltimore Washington Auto Outlet in the 2700 block of Annapolis Road at around 12:30 a.m. after the building's burglar alarm was triggered. Two men wearing masks were at the scene when police arrived. One ran to a red 2005 Chevrolet Corvette, which police said was stolen from the business and parked nearby, and drove at an officer who was outside of his patrol car, according to police.

A second officer shot at the suspect in the car because he feared for his partner's safety, police said, but the driver fled south on Interstate 295 and it was not known if he was struck.

Police said a silver 2007 Mercedes Benz CL 550 was also stolen and that this indicates there may be more suspects involved. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call 410-222-3566.

The officer who discharged his weapon, a three-year veteran assigned to the Patrol Services Bureau, was placed on routine administrative leave pending an investigation. The department did not identify him.
