American Red Cross

Volunteers ages 14 and older are needed to help with blood drives. Volunteers greet donors, provide customer service and serve refreshments. Participants must complete an application and attend an orientation/training session; those older than 18 must undergo a background check. Annapolis Maritime Museum

The museum seeks a full-time volunteer coordinator to serve from Sept. 14 through July 31, 2012. This is an AmeriCorps position with Volunteer Maryland, a program of the governor's office. The position provides a stipend, an education award and benefits. More information and an application can be downloaded from the website at amaritime.org. Applications must be emailed to hr@amaritime.org before Wednesday, June 15. The museum also needs volunteers to expand its innovative environmental education program, conduct tours to the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, restore wooden boats, interpret the museum's exhibits to the public, and help with the winter seminar series, the summer concert series and other events. Commission for Women

The Anne Arundel County Commission for Women seeks volunteers to help address issues important to women and families in the county. The commission serves as a resource and advocacy group and advises officials on issues of significance to women. The commission consists of 16 members representing a diverse cross-section of the community. Members, appointed for two-year terms, are expected to attend monthly meetings, ad hoc committees and working group sessions, a one-day annual planning retreat and commission-sponsored events. Box of Rain Foundation

Volunteers are needed to act as mentors for the Big Sailor/Little Sailor Program and as sailing instructors. Donations of funds and safety boats for sailing classes, boats, boating equipment — especially life preservers and gear — are also needed. Information: 443-254-0024.

Cats R Us Inc.

This no-kill facility, which operates small shelters in the Annapolis and Arnold areas, seeks volunteers to provide foster homes. Also, volunteers age 8 and older are needed to assist with cleaning the shelters, attending adoption shows at PetSmart in Annapolis, making home deliveries and sitting with cats. Emmaus Center

Emmaus Center, a nonprofit that serves poor and homeless people, offers clinical and pastoral counseling and creates opportunities for employment, needs volunteer receptionists 18 and older to greet walk-ins and answer phones. Information: 410-766-7729, emmauscenter@gmail.com or emmauscenter.net.

Hearts & Homes for Youth

Volunteers 18 and older are needed for tutoring, mentoring, internships, renovation projects, recreation sponsors, office assistance and beautification projects. The organization helps troubled children and youths who are abused, neglected or runaways to become independent and productive. For information, call 301-589-8444, ext. 212.

Light House Shelter

Volunteers age 18 and older are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children's program, cleaning and maintenance, office and administration, adult education programs and the overnight homeless program. Pro bono professionals are also needed to serve the shelter and its clients with skills such as accounting, medicine, law and carpentry. Hours are flexible and training is provided. United Cerebral Palsy

United Cerebral Palsy of Southern Maryland needs volunteers to serve as office assistants, on the board of directors and on committees, as handymen, and by placing and picking up donation canisters, assisting at events, assisting with recreational activities and doing yard work. Youth Services Bureau

Mentors are needed for youths ages 5-18. Training will be provided and a background check is required. Volunteers are also needed for educational and cultural activities for children. Information: 410-626-1800.

Watermen's museum

The Shady Side Rural Heritage Society, which operates the Captain Salem Avery House, a Shady Side watermen's museum, is seeking volunteers ages 16 and older to act as docents and greeters, lead children's activities, help with research, coordinate events, do landscaping and act as flower arranger, kitchen assistant, landscaper, library assistant, museum educator, photographer, seamstress, video editor and in other capacities.
