5k run/walk

Registration is underway for the "Moving Around the World" 5K Run and Walk sponsored by the Rotary Club of Annapolis and the Rotaract Club of Annapolis on April 9. Event will be held in Quiet Waters Park's Sassafras Pavilion off Hillsmere Drive in Annapolis. Advance registration is $25; $30 on day of event; free for children 12 and younger. Sign in and race packet pick up is from 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., with runners beginning at 10 a.m., followed by the walkers. Advance registration must be made by April 1. 'Law School for the Public'

Free program being held at Saturday, March 5, in the Careers Center Building at Anne Arundel Community College, 101 College Parkway in Arnold, covers civil, criminal and family law topics and is led by Anne Arundel County attorneys and judges. Event begins at 8 a.m. with registration and the lead session, "Do I Need a Lawyer." Program is divided into three sessions with six topics offered each session; some topics will be repeated. Sessions from: 8:50 a.m.-9:50 a.m., 10 a.m.-11 a.m., and 11:10 a.m.-12:10 p.m. Space is limited. Information and registration: 410-777-7323. Grant applications

The Rotary Club of Annapolis is accepting grant applications until March 15 to distribute the proceeds from its annual crab feast in August.

Applicants may apply for a grant online at annapolisrotary.org or by mail using the online application as your template. Mailing address: Grants Committee, Annapolis Rotary Club, P.O. Box 603, Annapolis 21404. Requests will be evaluated and recipients will be notified and receive the funds during April and May. Winter golf at Fort Meade

Active-duty, retired military and civilian guests can play 18 holes of golf and get use of a cart for $25 during this winter special. Prices are available 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays-Fridays and after noon on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Directions and information: 301-677-5326.

'Recycle Forward'

Hillsmere Elementary School in Annapolis is participating in a program that recycles used technology to raise money for new technology. There will be a community drive through the end of the school year for donations of used cell phones, inkjet and laser cartridges, old laptops, PDAs, iPods, MP3 players, video games, GPS systems, DVDs, calculators, LCD monitors and digital cameras. "Recycle Forward" is a joint effort between "Cartridges for Kids," a recycling program that pays cash to schools, and Digital Wish, a nonprofit that puts technology into the hands of educators. Baseball league

The Chesapeake Men's Senior Baseball League is seeking teams and/or players to fill rosters for the coming season. There are divisions for players older than 25, older than 35 and older than 45. Each team will play 20 to 22 games. Players must meet the minimum age requirement for their division by Dec. 31. Information: chesapeakemsbl.com.

Senior Idol

The fifth annual Maryland Senior Competition and Benefit will be held March 30 at the Chesapeake Arts Center Theater, 194 Hammonds Lane in Brooklyn Park. Auditions take place Feb. 18 at the Pascal Senior Activity Center, 125 Dorsey Road in Glen Burnie. Rules, registration and a photo release and consent form will be available at all seven senior centers in Anne Arundel County or online at http://www.aacounty.org/aging. The contest is open to anyone who has not sung for a living and is at least 60 years old. Information: 410-222-6680.

Resource guide

The Anne Arundel Volunteer Center has released its 2010-2011 Youth Resource Guide, which provides information about nonprofit and faith-based organizations in the county. Youth volunteer guide

The Volunteer Opportunities for Youth Guide is available for download free on the center's website, volunteerannearundel.org. Printed copies can be ordered for $5 each. Register your bike

The Annapolis Police Department sponsors a bicycle registration program. When an owner registers a bike, the owner's name, address and phone number and the bike's serial number, manufacturer and color are recorded in the Police Department's database. Any resident of Annapolis can register a bike. To schedule an appointment, call Cpl. Craig Medley at 410-268-9000, ext. 7225, or e-mail him at cemedley@annapolis.gov. Owners must bring their bikes when registering. Neighborhood associations should contact Medley if they want to hold a community registration.

Law enforcement

The Annapolis Police Department Law Enforcement Explorer Post 199 is accepting applications. Law Enforcement Exploring is a program for those who have completed eighth grade and are 14 to 20 years old. The program offers information on career activities. Meetings are 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at police headquarters, 199 Taylor Ave. in Annapolis. Information: 410-268-9000 or at the office.

Doll collection

More than 100 handmade dolls from the Vilma Stockton collection are on display and for sale at the Captain Salem Avery House Museum, 1418 E. West Shady Side Road. Hours are 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. Information: 410-867-4486.

Fingerprinting service

The Annapolis Police Department offers fingerprinting service at 199 Taylor Ave. from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays. Service will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the first Saturday of the month. The fee is $5 per fingerprint card, and the person being printed must supply the cards. Check or money order only. Tours of historic house

The Anne Arundel County Historical Society has opened the historic Benson-Hammond House and North Browse and Buy Shoppe at Aviation Boulevard and Andover Road in Linthicum for the season. Tours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. Group tours are by appointment. The Kuethe Library for Historical and Genealogical Research, 5 Crain Highway S.E., operated jointly with the Anne Arundel Genealogical Society, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays year-round.
