Foster grandparents

The Foster Grandparent Program of the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities seeks volunteers 55 and older to mentor exceptional-needs children at various sites. Volunteers serve 15 to 40 hours a week and provide mentoring, tutoring, advice, special attention and life skills to help children in special education classes, Head Start centers, a homeless shelter and a family support center to succeed. Activities may include reading stories and listening to children, working with puzzles, and helping children to feed themselves, set a table, and learn colors, numbers and the alphabet. Maritime Museum

The Annapolis Maritime Museum needs volunteers to expand its environmental education program, conduct tours to the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, restore wooden boats, and help with the winter and summer concert series. Information: 410-295-0104 or


Light House Shelter

Volunteers, 18 and older, are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children's program, cleaning and maintenance, office and administration, adult education programs, and the overnight homeless program. Pro bono professionals are also needed to serve the shelter and its clients with skills such as accounting, medicine, law and carpentry. Hours are flexible and training is provided. Polar Bear Plunge

Volunteers are needed between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. for registration, food and beverage distribution, crowd control and other duties at this annual event Saturday, Jan. 29, at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis. Also, volunteers are needed for the "Super Sunday Sweep" from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 30. Information: 410-789-6677.

Ordnance Road Correctional Center

Volunteers, 21 and older and who pass a background check, are needed as adult literacy tutors, assist in the library, the sewing program, as a newsletter editor and as a photographer for special programs and event.
