Pedestrian is struck and killed on Ritchie Highway

A Severna Park man was struck and killed Saturday night as he was attempting to cross Ritchie Highway, Anne Arundel County police said.

James Howard Minnix, 50, of the 200 block of Arundel Beach Road, was struck about 10:20 p.m. as he was crossing the highway just north of Robinson Road and a short distance north of the marked crosswalk for the intersection, police said. He was hit by a southbound 1996 Plymouth Voyager minivan and thrown into the road, where a 2002 Ford F-150 pickup truck also struck him. Both vehicles stopped, police said.

Anne Arundel fire medics took Minnix to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead. The occupants of the vehicles were not injured.

Police said their initial investigation indicates that pedestrian error and alcohol consumed by the victim may have been factors in the incident, though the investigation continues.
