Flu shots

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health will administer flu and pneumococcal vaccinations to residents at senior activity centers. A new high-dose vaccine will be available for those 65 and older. While vaccinations are free for county residents, a $20 donation is appreciated. Medicare Part B will cover the $20 donation but cards must be presented. Vaccinations will be given from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at these centers:

Oct. 26, Pasadena Senior Center, 4103 Mountain Road.

Oct. 28, South County Senior Center, 27 Stepneys Lane, Edgewater.

Nov. 3, Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie.

Senior services

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities has published its 2010-2011 edition of "Services for Seniors, Adults with Disabilities and Caregivers," a free directory of businesses and service providers. Copies are at department headquarters at the Heritage Office Complex, 2666 Riva Road, Annapolis, and at the seven senior activity centers, libraries, Food Lion, Wawa and CVS stores. Single seniors group The Single Seniors Group at Pascal Senior Activity Center, 125 Dorsey Road in Glen Burnie, encourages companionship, support and group participation in activities such as movies, dances, picnics and tours. Information: 410-222-6680 or and click on the senior center.

Halloween party Annapolis Senior Activity Center members and their grandchildren are invited to a Halloween party beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the center, 119 S. Villa Ave. There will be a costume contest, and the kids can trick or treat from classroom to classroom. Sign-up and information: 410-222-1818.

Health screenings From 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, a nurse will be available at the Arnold Senior Activity Center, 44 Church Road, for blood pressure and glucose screenings for diabetics. Free. 410-222-1922.

Memoir writing The course, which teaches how to write an autobiography, will be held 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Arnold Senior Activity Center. There will be an opportunity to learn listening and interviewing skills, writing tips and proofreading. Information and registration: 410-222-1922.

Health insurance A representative from the Senior Health Insurance Program is available by appointment to discuss health insurance concerns at the Arnold Senior Activity Center. Appointments and information: 410-222-1922.

Volunteer grandparents sought The Foster Grandparents Program of the county Department of Aging and Disabilities seeks volunteer grandparents to help mentor children with special needs. Volunteers serve 15 to 40 hours a week, providing mentoring, tutoring, advice and attention, teaching life skills to children in special education classes, staffing a homeless shelter, a family support center and other agencies. Activities may include reading stories, listening, helping children feed themselves, setting the table, working with puzzles, and helping children learn colors, numbers and the alphabet. Volunteers must be income-eligible and at least 60 years old. Benefits include a tax-free stipend, paid training, vacation, sick leave, free transportation, lunch and a physical exam.
