Open house

The College Parkway Place Cafe, a senior nutrition site operated by the Anne Arundel Department of Aging and Disabilities, will hold an open house from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 28 at 570 Bellerive Drive in Annapolis. Program is for those 55 and older. Activities include nutro bingo, tea time, a speaker discussing "The Benefits of Tea," raffles and a special lunch, which include rib eye steak, baked potato, green beans, salad, roll and melon. The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities has published its 2010-2011 edition of "Services for Seniors, Adults with Disabilities and Caregivers," a free directory of businesses and service providers. Copies are at department headquarters at the Heritage Office Complex, 2666 Riva Road, Annapolis, and at the seven senior activity centers, libraries, Food Lion, Wawa and CVS stores. Safe-driving course This one-day refresher course will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Arnold Senior Activity Center. Cost is $14, $12 for AARP members. Driver's license and membership card must be presented at sign-up. Information: 410-222-1922.

Single seniors group The Single Seniors Group at Pascal Senior Activity Center, 125 Dorsey Road in Glen Burnie, encourages companionship, support and group participation in activities such as movies, dances, picnics and tours. Memoir writing The course, which teaches how to write an autobiography, will be held 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Arnold Senior Activity Center, 44 Church Road. There will be an opportunity to learn listening and interviewing skills, writing tips and proofreading. Information and registration: 410-222-1922.

Health insurance A representative from the Senior Health Insurance Program is available by appointment to discuss health insurance concerns at the Arnold Senior Activity Center. Appointments and information: 410-222-1922.

Volunteer grandparents sought The Foster Grandparents Program of the county Department of Aging and Disabilities seeks volunteer grandparents to help mentor children with special needs. Volunteers serve 15 to 40 hours a week, providing mentoring, tutoring, advice and attention, teaching life skills to children in special education classes, staffing a homeless shelter, a family support center and other agencies. Activities may include reading stories, listening, helping children feed themselves, setting the table, working with puzzles, and helping children learn colors, numbers and the alphabet. Volunteers must be income-eligible and at least 60 years old. Benefits include a tax-free stipend, paid training, vacation, sick leave, free transportation, lunch and a physical exam.
