American Red Cross

Volunteers ages 14 and older are needed to help with blood drives. Volunteers greet donors, provide customer service and serve refreshments. Participants must complete an application and attend an orientation/training session. People older than 18 must undergo a background check. Annapolis Language Bank

Volunteers with second-language capability are needed to help communicate with visitors who have difficulty speaking English. Information: 410-263-1183.

Cats R Us Inc.

This no-kill facility, which operates two small shelters in the Annapolis and Arnold areas, seeks volunteers to provide foster homes. Also, volunteers 8 and older are needed to assist with cleaning the shelters, attending adoption shows at PetSmart in Annapolis, making home deliveries or sitting with cats. Training is provided for shelter and adoption workers.

Eastport Girls Club

The club is seeking high school seniors or adult volunteers to serve as weekly tutors to club participants in grades 5-12 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Training will be provided, and a background check is required.

Healing Arts

American Healing Arts Alliance Inc., a nonprofit educational alliance of healing arts and sciences organizations, educators, practitioners, students and individuals, is seeking volunteers 18 and older to help with monthly programs and events. The organization sponsors peace-building educational programs.

Help is needed with volunteer recruitment, event planning and logistics, fundraising, coordinating entertainment, grant-writing and press releases.

Help at detention center

Volunteers 21 and older who pass a background check are needed at the Jennifer Road Detention Center to work in the library, assist with pre-GED classes and the education program, facilitate self-help workshops on parenting, job readiness, financial issues and more. Hospice services

Heartland Hospice, a facility that provides hospice care to patients with limited life expectancy, seeks volunteers ages 18 and older with a driver's license as friendly visitors to look in on patients in their homes or nursing homes, to serve as vigil volunteers and sit with patients without immediate family who are nearing death and also as bereavement volunteers to call on families of those recently deceased. Maritime Museum

The Annapolis Maritime Museum needs volunteers to staff the McNasby Oyster Co. building from noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. Volunteers will be trained to interpret the museum's exhibits, themes and education programs. You must be enthusiastic and willing to learn. Ombudsman program

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities seeks volunteers to assist in protecting the rights and promoting the well-being of residents in long-term care facilities. Long-term care facilities include nursing homes and assisted-living homes. Information: 410-222-4464, ext. 3111.

Quiet Waters Park

Volunteers 15 and older are needed for a variety of tasks to support the operation of the park and events throughout the year. Information: 410-222-1777.

Salvation Army

Volunteers are needed at the 511 S. Crain Highway location to serve lunch to the homeless between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Information: 410-768-0477.

Volunteers are needed to drop off donations Monday through Friday for the Salvation Army's food pantries in Annapolis and Glen Burnie. Suggested items include nonperishable canned goods and boxed food; toiletries are also welcome. Groups that hold food drives can arrange to have the food picked up. Information: 410-263-4091.

Secure the Call

Secure the Call, a local agency that redistributes used and unwanted cell phones as 911 emergency-only phones, needs volunteers 18 and older to place collection barrels. Information: 301-891-2900.

Special Olympics

Volunteers, 16 and older, are needed as coaches in the evenings, to assist with special events and regional competitions, fundraising and more. Information: 410-553-6311 or soaamd.org.

Support groups

Volunteers 25 and older are needed to lead support groups for early stage Alzheimer's disease and related dementia. Volunteers must be a licensed nurse or social worker with knowledge of the progression of the disease and have strong communication and group-support management skills. Wildlife sanctuary

The Davidsonville Wildlife Sanctuary treats and cares for injured and orphaned animals and, if possible, releases them back into the wild.
