Man sentenced to 12 years in attack on ex-girlfriend

Baltimore Sun

Carrying a protective order that barred him from his ex-girlfriend, Fernando Reis broke into her Crofton home last year, hid, and stabbed her as she slept. Anne Arundel County Circuit Judge Paul A. Hackner sentenced him Tuesday to 12 years in prison for violating the order and attacking Sandra Barone a second time in less than two weeks after she ended a live-in relationship. Hackner said Reis would be on probation for five years after being released and must stay away from Barone. Reis choked Barone on March 21, 2009, and after she obtained a protective order, hid in her basement and stabbed her at 1 a.m. April 1. Reis pleaded guilty last year to the April stabbing and entered an Alford plea, which acknowledges that prosecutors have enough evidence for a conviction, in the March assault case.
