Anne Arundel head has back surgery

Baltimore Sun

County Executive John R. Leopold was recovering Tuesday afternoon after back surgery at Anne Arundel Medical Center, his spokesman said.

"It was a successful surgery, and we're all looking forward to him getting back to work and having a speedy recovery," said spokesman Dave Abrams.

The procedure, which Abrams described as "minor elective surgery," began about 7:30 a.m. and ended about 10:30 a.m. Leopold had been experiencing "soreness in his back that was very uncomfortable," Abrams said.

Leopold, 67, was elected Anne Arundel county executive in 2006 after serving in the House of Delegates for 20 years. Leopold, a Republican, plans to seek re-election.

Under the county charter, Chief Administrative Officer Dennis M. Callahan takes over Leopold's duties in his absence. Abrams said Leopold, who he said hasn't taken a vacation in three years, probably will work during his recovery, but the doctor will determine when Leopold is physically able to return.

"He never takes any time off, so it will be unusual for him not to be here," Abrams said. "But I'm sure he'll be in touch with us."
