Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold was in stable condition Tuesday afternoon after having back surgery at a county hospital, his spokesman said.

"It was a successful surgery and we're all looking forward to him getting back to work and having a speedy recovery," said Dave Abrams, a spokesman for Leopold.

The roughly three-hour surgery, which Abrams described as "minor elective surgery," began about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at Anne Arundel Medical Center. The surgery was prompted by back pain, said Abrams, who explained that Leopold "was having soreness in his back that was very uncomfortable."

Leopold, 67, was elected county executive in 2006, previously serving in the House of Delegates for 20 years. Leopold, a Republican, plans to seek re-election.

Under the County Charter, county Chief Administrative Officer Dennis M. Callahan takes over Leopold's duties in his absence. But Abrams said he expects Leopold, who he said hasn't taken a vacation in three years, to work during his recovery. Abrams said it's up to his doctor to decide when Leopold can physically return to work.

"He never takes any time off so it will be unusual for him not to be here, but I'm sure he'll be in touch with us," said Abrams.
