Former Annapolis alderman and mayoral candidate Samuel E. Shropshire was sentenced Monday to a weekend in jail and two years of supervised probation for groping the crotch of a Naval Academy midshipman last May.

Shropshire, 62, was convicted in December of second-degree assault and fourth-degree sex offense by Anne Arundel County Circuit Judge Paul F. Harris Jr.

Harris sentenced Shropshire to a year in jail, with all but one weekend suspended. Shropshire is to serve his sentence this weekend.

The midshipman, 21 at the time of the incident, testified that Shropshire, his sponsor, was taking him back to the military academy after the two had been out drinking and eating, and the Mid was drunk. After the second time Shropshire touched his genital area, the midshipman said, he swore at Shropshire and his sponsor apologized.

The defense tried to attack the midshipman's credibility, but prosecutors showed the judge text messages in which Shropshire texted "Sorry" to the midshipman minutes after dropping him off at school.

Shropshire lost the primary election for mayor and his elected position as an alderman ended last year. The Naval Academy dropped him as a sponsor after the midshipman made the allegation.
