Harford County has nearly 80 percent of its roadways plowed and passable, but it was still coping with closed roads, storm cleanup and snow drifts, officials said Friday.

As of noon, 42 roads, all in northern Harford County, remained impassable due to drifting snow from the latest storms.

"We can't give a specific timeframe for when these roads will be cleared," said Robert B. Thomas Jr., a county spokesman. "Most of these roads are in farm areas, where snow continues to drift across fields."

The county Division of Highways was working around the clock, using snowplows, front-end loaders and road graders to clear snow and ice. The county was also coping with several buildings that collapsed under the weight of heavy wet snows that have not melted on flat rooftops. The Prince of Peace parish center in Edgewood was the latest building deemed unsafe.

"Its roof and walls are bowing due to the weight of wet snow," Thomas said. "We have posted the building as unsafe and it cannot be occupied until an experienced structural engineer inspects it."

The Fallston Airpark, a horse barn in the northern part of the county, a trucking company in Jarrettsville and a mobile home in Havre de Grace were all dealing with collapsed roofs.
