Man found dead in Annapolis fire

A middle-aged man died during a house fire in Annapolis Friday morning, according to the city's fire department.

Fire officials have not identified the sole occupant of the house, a man whose body was found on the second floor of a single-family home in the 900 block of Bay Ridge Ave. in Eastport. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The blaze started at about 1 a.m. at a 2-story dwelling across the street from a fire station, a department spokesman said. Firefighters arrived quickly, the spokesman said, and were not hindered by the snow.

Fire officials say the blaze was contained mostly to the first floor and placed under control in about an hour. The house had smoke detectors, but they were not operating, fire officials said.

Investigators have not released a cause or monetary loss.
